Melitta Programmable Coffee Maker – Full Review

When you’re in the mood for a rich hot cup of coffee, forget the cafe, the long line-ups and high prices! Brew your own perfect pot of the glorious liquid right at home. The great thing about this Melitta is that it’s programmable. Set it up the night before and as soon as you roll out of bed, your coffee is ready. If you need that shot of Joe to get you moving in the morning, then you want it ready as soon as you can find your way to the kitchen. The flavor is every bit as good as what the cafes serve, yet at a small fraction of the price!

Pros

The cone shaped filter allows for the best possible coffee extraction and swings out for easy access.
The vacuum sealed lid keeps the coffee fresh and hot and the lid is thumb activated for easy pouring, no twisting the lid.
The coffee maker can be programmed to begin brewing at any time you choose.
Brews at the optimal temperature with three flavor settings.
Can be used to make iced coffee.
  High quality construction.

Cons

The carafe is a bit heavy.
The brewing is a bit slow.
It is hard to get all of the coffee out of the carafe.

Questions and Answers

Does the coffee maker have a warming plate?

There is a warming plate that heats up the carafe during the brewing cycle, but it shuts off as soon as brewing is finished. The carafe is designed to keep the coffee hot without a warming plate to prevent the coffee from burning.

Can you get your hand into the carafe for cleaning?

If you have a small hand, you can but it may still be a tight fit.
How hot is the coffee and how long does it stay hot?

Once the brewing is done, the coffee is quite hot, but it cools down quickly. After about an hour it’s not hot at all.
Is the cord long enough to keep the steam from hitting my kitchen cabinets?

The cord is twenty-five inches long. That’s quite a bit longer than on most coffee makers.
Does it keep the programming after a power outage?

No. If the power goes out, you will have to reset the timer and programming.
  Is the carafe dishwasher safe?

It’s not a good idea to put a stainless steel pot in the dishwasher.

Can I brew just one cup of coffee?

The Melitta is a 10 cup (12 cup is available as well) coffee maker, but this is based on small cup sizes (less than 4 ounces each). Brewing less than 6 cups doesn’t work very well. This means you should use at least 20 ounces of water, which most people consider one cup of coffee. Not too many people only drink 4 ounces at a time.

Is this coffee maker covered by a manufacturer’s warranty?

There is a warranty, but the customer service is very poor and the company doesn’t stand behind the warranty very well. If you want any parts replaced, you have to pay for shipping.

Conclusion

The Melitta Programmable Coffee Maker is well built and makes great tasting coffee. The thermal, stainless steel carafe is designed to keep the coffee hot all day, but most people found this wasn’t the case. After about an hour or two, the coffee had to be reheated to bring it back to a good drinking temperature. However, it doesn’t get that awful bitter taste you get with glass carafes left on a heating pad, and the coffee won’t burn because the warming plate shuts off as soon as the brewing is done. This is a good machine for people that hate waiting for their coffee in the morning. Just set it the night before, and it will be hot and ready when you get up in the morning!

Great, but not perfect. My carafe leaked around the bottom rim. I guess this was a common problem with a certain series, because the company just for the series number and send me a new one! I haven’t any more problems. It works great now
